Each spring our members vote on ten Share the Plate recipients. About once a month we are joined in the pulpit by a representative from one organization to hear more about their recent work. This Sunday we will be joined by a representative who will share information about the Indian Center. We will give them all loose cash and checks with Indian Center in the memo line. You may also give electronically during the month of October. Here are the options: DONATE. When giving, please specify "Share the Plate".
The mission of the Indian Center is "to provide value to the Native American community by creating and obtaining programs that empower self-sufficiency and positive quality of life standards in individuals and families." More information at https://www.indiancenterinc.org. This month's exhibit celebrates the Unitarian Church of Lincoln's (UCL's) continued relationship with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNL.
Many OLLI members have visited 6300 A Street for Sunday services, classes, lectures, and social events. During the month of October, OLLI members will be visiting the Unitarian Church of Lincoln (UCL) to see their artwork. Office Hours: Tuesday through Friday 9AM to 3PM, Sundays 9AM to Noon. This series began on April 8, 2023, with a field trip to the Durham Museum, the Malcolm X Foundation, and then a conversation about racism at Second Unitarian, and continued on July 8 at First Unitarian with a facilitated conversation focusing on family, neighborhood, and community. On September 23 we'll continue our conversation and we'll end our time together with ice cream. Please reach out to Judy Hart, at [email protected] or 402-805-7866 if you have questions. Are you an award-winning Potluck participant? You can be!
We are having a Potluck Competition to kick-off this year’s Annual Giving Campaign on September 10 after the Sunday service. We will have prizes for Best Improved Previous Potluck dish so everyone has a chance to fix that one disaster they had, as well as the Audience Favorite Potluck dish. And, so all have a chance to win, everyone who brings a dish will be entered into a drawing! No restrictions on number of entries or chefs! Start pouring through your recipe box and watch the weekly e-blast for more details! SAVE THE DATE! Our SECOND CHANCE auction will happen November 12 to 19. The bidding will be done in person, not online. We’re goin’ old-school this time. To be successful, we need your donations, so be thinking and planning.
What kind of donations, you ask? 1. Here’s your SECOND CHANCE to offer a meal. Maybe you enjoyed a meal that you purchased at the April auction and have decided you could do that too. 1. Likewise, it’s your SECOND CHANCE to offer a handmade item. Maybe you’ve had time to take a class or start a new hobby or craft and want to share it by donating one of your creations. 2. Also, you’ll have a SECOND CHANCE at offering a Tasty Treat. Maybe you can try out a new recipe or share a family favorite. So this is your time to be thinking, creating and deciding on what you could offer. More information to come in Friday eblasts.... Not signed up to receive electronic communication from us yet? You can do that now with the button in the footer of this website! On Sunday, August 20, after service is over until 1:30 pm or so, please Show UP to help Spiff Up, Clean Up, remove dust bunnies and cobwebs, vacuum behind furniture, around room edges and in corners, wash windows inside and out, clean walls of scuff marks and handprints.
If you have favorite cleaning tools and devices (e.g. a vacuum cleaner with an extension hose or a long-handled duster) please bring them. We’ll have a few dusters, some cleaning towels, window cleaning spray, and some gentle wall cleaning items. There will be a long extension pole and squeegee to wash the tall windows. And we’ll have some snacks to enjoy afterwards. The start of a new year is also the time to try new things! Over the month of September, I will be holding a series of four sessions on how we plan and do worship a the Unitarian Church. Many of the worship associates will be a part of it, but it is also an opportunity to come see what goes one behind the scenes every week to prepare what the congregation sees on Sunday morning. If you’ve ever wondered about getting involved, or have an idea for a service you would like to lead, but do not want to commit to joining a new committee right now, this is a great opportunity to get a taste of worship planning.
Currently, the plan is to meet on four consecutive Tuesday nights: September 5, 6:00-8:00 PM Worship Planning 101: From blank page to service blurb. September 12, 5:30-6:30 PM (to accommodate the Board Meeting) Cultivating Worship: Structuring a worship service around a theme. September 19, 6:00-8:00 PM Putting It All Together: Writing an Order of Service, and working with music, religious education, and Audio Visual. September 26, 6:00-8:00 PM Practice: Trying out what we have been talking about for a month. I hope to see you there! Oscar Further details will be announced in upcoming Friday eblasts. If you haven't signed up yet, you may opt into our mailing list by using the button in the footer of this website. This is a good time to start. We have a new PC computer. We are now hard-wired, which means that the internet is more stable. We always have two people. Bob Fuson is present to help with troubleshooting issues. Individual training is available. This is a fun and challenging way to support worship.
Please contact Linda R. Brown, [email protected] , if you would like to serve on the Audio-Visual Support Crew. Thursday, June 15 • 6:30PM • Horizons Community Church, 3200 Grainger Parkway
Everyone is invited to attend the community celebration to applaud what we’ve built together, even if you did not make it to the Nehemiah Action Assembly. This will be a family-friendly event with music, activities and games, updates on issue successes, awards for network members and faith communities, and refreshments. For planning purposes, please let us know that you will be attending at this LINK. You will not be turned away at the door if you did not sign up in advance. The power of 1,105 people was harnessed on May 4 at the Lancaster Event Center for Justice in Action’s Nehemiah Action Assembly. Ten percent of the attendance, 124 participants, were members and friends of our church. We is one of 20 founding faith communities of Justice in Action. Preliminary conversations started almost two years ago among a group of Lincoln/Lancaster County ministers, including Rev. Oscar Sinclair. Seven members of our congregation hosted listening sessions last October. Then they transitioned to be our Network Team Leaders, maintaining contact with members of our congregation and inviting them to Justice in Action rallies and the Nehemiah Action Assembly. The Unitarian Church of Lincoln (UCL) is represented on the Board by Judy Hart and Judy Kelly (with Marcia and Ray Cederdahl and Elle Straatmann serving as alternates). Judy Kelly and Judy Hart participated as members of the criminal justice (Judy Kelly) and mental health (Judy Hart) research teams in preparation for this year’s Nehemiah Action Assembly. Visit https://www.justice-in-action.org/ for the full 2023 Nehemiah Action Assembly to learn about the mental health and criminal justice reform issue reports and to sign up for the Justice in Action newsletter. The cycle of listening sessions, issue selection, and research, and a Nehemiah Action Assembly will be repeated annually by Justice in Action. |
